Back in March, before I started this blog, I had the pleasure of going by the studio space of San Francisco artist, Elizabeth Kunath. I knew she had been busy creating a new body of work so I was really excited to see the new direction in which she was going. I have long enjoyed Bessie’s work, which, up to this point, was mostly collage and two-dimensional pieces. Perhpas it was the sense of freedom and playfulness in her creations that I appreciated most. Her new work is no less different. Moving toward sculpture, Bessie has managed to maintain the exploratory nature of her work and keep it absolutely genuine. Some people have to force themselves to let go and just be able to freely explore their creativity without pondering the overriding construct of self-judgement. I couldn’t help but feel this rule doesn’t apply for Bessie.
