I first discovered the work of Ria Brodell at Judi Rotenberg’s room at the Aqua fair at Art Basel Miami last year. I love her choice of color and her knowledge of composition. There’s something so soothing about the white space in her pieces. More figurative than her previous bird creature drawings, the new work is more personal in nature as Brodell renders herself in gouache as various personalities, both celebrity and civilian, from Freddie Mercury to a lumber jack. Her solo show, “The Handsome and the Holy” will be exhibited at Judi Rotenberg Gallery in Boston and runs through July 11th.
