I’m about to sound like a namedropper here but, when I was hanging out with James Jean at Miami Art Basel a couple of years ago, I asked him what his favorite art tool was and he replied, “A no. 2 pencil.” The art of David Jien brilliantly utilizes this same famed object to execute some of the most original drawings out there. I don’t know why it surprises me that such an everyday instrument is what Jien uses to create his work. Maybe it’s because I imagine talented artists like him must use magic.
