New York artist, Matt Mignanelli recently opened a new show at the Medicine Agency‘s gallery space in San Francisco. His work has been featured in numerous high-profile publications such as GQ, Juxtapoz, and Time Out: Chicago. I love his vibrant sense of color and his bold geometries. The work reminds me of some, pared down, vintage-futuristic landscape. His solo show entitled “Transformative Illuminations” will be on display through September 10th.

The incomparably influential and illusive Oaxacan artist, Dr. Lakra just opened his first solo show with Kurimanzutto Gallery, Mexico City over the weekend. With rare showings in the US, Dr. Lakra has proven no less inspiring to many contemporary urban artists working in America. Dr. Lakra uses (more…)

It’s rare that I see video installation work that interests me both conceptually and aesthetically. The work of Kimberlee Koym-Murteira is the exception to this rule. Her work is engaging (some pieces are actually interactive) and thoughtful without losing its sense of beauty. I’m incredibly disappointed that I will miss her opening at 1078 Gallery in Chico, CA on August 21st, but you don’t have to. Follow the link to learn more about her upcoming show and to check out stills of her past installation work. (more…)

July 20, 2009 – Lainya Magaña and Space07 are pleased to present Pull, a collection of new work by Sacramento artist, Micah Crandall-Bear. In these recent works, Micah pulls from the founders of Abstract Expressionism and the painters that influence him the most. Micah’s artistic arrangements are imbued with hints of Pollock’s vivacity, Rothko’s clarity, and Motherwell’s unmitigated compositions. Expressing Micah’s unique perspectives and understanding of color, Pull will feature a variety of colorful acrylic works on canvas.
MICAH CRANDALL-BEAR is an abstract painter based in Sacramento, CA. He has made a name for himself with his bold, abstract compositions that stir the imagination and awake the observer’s creative consciousness. As Micah states: “The alchemy of art offers an allure that unfolds somewhere between concept and destination. It is here that I find my best work.” Micah has worked under the tutelage and guidance of several highly recognized California artists. His work resides in numerous private collections.

It’s my belief that among other things, art should inspire, fascinate, and fill your mind with the kind of wonder akin to that of childhood. For this reason, Tim Hawkinson ranks as my all time favorite artist. Is that too definitive of me to say? Perhaps. But then I think: (more…)
