Steven Riddle. Untitled. airbrush acrylics, oil based monotype, cut paper collage on paper. 20x23. 2010

Baltimore-based artist Steven Riddle recently emailed to share some images of his work with me. What immediately struck me about the work was his sense of color and geometry. Rock formations, mineral clusters and geodes are placed in stellar formations that suggest some sort of inter-galactic composition. I wanted to learn more, so I asked him to do a quick interview for A&O, to which I’m grateful he agreed. Be sure to follow the link for more beautiful images and a more thorough explanation of the work in the artist’s own words. (more…)

Karl Haendel, "Diamond #2", 2009, pencil on paper, 90"x67" (via Harris Lieberman)

When the curator for NOMA Gallery shared the work of Karl Haendel with me, I was convinced they were photographs. Haendel culled the imagery for these intensely realistic, painstakingly rendered graphite drawings from personal and cultural sources.  The images are from his summer 2009 show with Harris Lieberman in New York City. To view a selection of my favorites from this collection, follow the link. (more…)

The recent work of New York painter, Julie Evans explores the intersection of adornment and devotion. Organic forms graced with a draping of pearl-like strands emerge through clouds of colorful vapor, floating like planetary bodies in the vast emptiness of white space. Evans’s previous work (more…)

3 Fuckers

3 Fuckers

I’m about to sound like a namedropper here but, when I was hanging out with James Jean at Miami Art Basel a couple of years ago, I asked him what his favorite art tool was and he replied, “A no. 2 pencil.” The art of David Jien brilliantly utilizes this same famed object to execute some of the most original drawings out there. I don’t know why it surprises me that such an everyday instrument is what Jien uses to create his work. Maybe it’s because I imagine talented artists like him must use magic. I wish my no. 2 pencil could do what his does. Check out more amazing graphite works by Jien and his magical pencil after the jump. (more…)
